Situation and Problems of Power Quality in Petroleum and Petrochemical Industry:

 

The electrical equipment of the power distribution system in the petroleum and petrochemical industry is complex, such as variable-frequency drive transmission equipment, DC transmission equipment (drawworks, pulleys, drill bits, drill pipes), variable-frequency drive pumps, and compressors (mud pumps, centrifugal pumps). Compressors, vapor compression refrigeration devices) and other power electronic equipment are distributed in various application sites in the industry. This creates a harsh power quality environment, which poses a great threat to the safe and normal operation of power systems and equipment.

 

Hazard:

Harm of harmonics and reactive power to power supply equipment:

Ø Increased loss of power transformers and generators, resulting in overheating and burnout

Ø The cable is overheated and the insulation is aging

Ø Increased dielectric consumption of power capacitors and overheating

Ø Increased neutral current and overheating

Harm of harmonics and reactive power to electrical equipment:

Ø Sensitive load is disturbed, computer error, crash

Ø Servo motor generates pulsation, AC motor generates vibration, and noise increases

Ø Abnormal operation of protection device, wrong tripping of switch

Ø Produce line conduction electromagnetic interference, digital transmission failure, communication broadcast cut

Ø The lighting equipment and the display produce flicker

The harm of harmonics and reactive power to the power grid:

Ø The power factor of the power grid is low, which occupies the resources of the transmission, transformation, and distribution equipment, and reduces the system voltage

Ø The quality of the power grid deteriorates, the waveform distortion increases, and the frequency changes

Ø Excessive consumption of reactive power and current RMS in the grid

Ø The burden on the power grid has increased and the available capacity has decreased
